PROJECT 21. Define which techniques you tried and mastered? Struggled?
The techniques that I tried, was drawing with charcoal as I tried mastering value within a portrait. I feel one of the major things that I struggled with was creating the portrait as the photo was old and had very little details in the face so it was hard for me to create the formation of the face. I feel like I mastered making slight indications to create the perception that the detail was there. 2. How did you draw inspiration from other artists techniques or aesthetics in your work? In what ways did you derive meaning or gain historical perspectives from their work? Why these artists? I drove inspiration from many artist and specifically Manuel Acosta, as he had done a portrait of Caesar Chaves for the time magazine and I wanted to do something similar with making a portrait of important figure wether it be history or my life . Also I was inspired by the movie coco to honor my past relatives. 3. Describe the evolution of your piece. Decisions made. Compositional elements. I had drawn a rough drawing , I was not happy with the way my face structure came out as it did not resemble the reference picture, I asked for advice from my teacher and she advised me to make slight indications, like drawing teeth in the mouth, as there was little detail and making the slightest indication will give resemblance to the portrait. I continued to work on the portrait and stubbled upon a struggle as I had never drawn bodies nor hands, I had to erase the bodies many times as the proportions of the bodies were wrong, I also had trouble with the value in the clothes as some part of the reference photo were lighter then the rest of the parts of the reference photo. I at first did not want to add the background of the photo because I felt it would take it away but then it felt like it was complete with out a background so I decided to have the background lighter and darker in certain areas to put emphasizes on certain details of the portrait. 4. If you could consider doing something over, explain why you would do this and what you would do next time? . If I were to change something, it would be to outline the clothing a little more to give a more realistic feel to the portrait and make it resemble the reference picture more. 5.Elaborate on how this piece links with your other pieces? What is the common thread? This fits within the common thread as it is taking the a piece of Latinx culture and celebrating the culture and traditions of the Latinx community. |
