SELF PORTRAIT |
PROJECT 11. Define which techniques you tried and mastered? Struggled?
The techniques that I tried, was drawing with charcoal and white pastel, I feel like I mastered how to draw with willow charcoal as I was able to make a light sketch and was able to change my face multiple times without making the sketch too dark. I feel like mastered value this time around as I chose a part of my cheek as the brown color so I add the darker values and then the Highlights where they actually are. I stuggled with the making the smallest indications on my peice because I thought everything had to be defined and that is not the case because often times the spacing betwwen teeth is often made to defined but in reality the smallest indication will make a big difference in how the piece looks. 2. How did you draw inspiration from other artists techniques or aesthetics in your work? In what ways did you derive meaning or gain historical perspectives from their work? Why these artists? I didn't really drive from inspiration from other artist as I did a self-portrait and wanted it to be something that really shows who I am and shows my personality and not anybody else's personality. 3. Describe the evolution of your piece. Decisions made. Compositional elements. When starting this self portait it was difficult getting the grid down as one side was always a little shorter than the other, and that is when my art teacher helped me by showing me a technique of measuring with your pencil. my grid then came out to be more accurate then before so I just went in with willow chorcoal in the eyes and I had to be extra careful with the placement with the eyes because if the eyes are in the wrong place then everything else will be placed wrong. So I was extra careful with the eyes and made sure before adding permanent charcoal to the eyes. I then began with the nose and just added the highlight on the nose. and added valuer around it and then started on the mouth but that was a mistake as I had placed the nose a little lower then it was so i had to erase the nose and do it over again. The placement of the mouth was right but it was the nose that was a little too close to the mouth. I then added the smallest indication for the teth and tried not to make the value inbetween the teeth too thick. It turned out okay could be a little better. it was then time to make the shirt and add words to the portrait and had a first put white around my head and that was a big misstake as I looked like a floating head. So i decided to erase it with the word along with it and now the meaning has changed as the emotions that are rarly shown to other are the main focus, rather then the emotions I portray to others. 4. If you could consider doing something over, explain why you would do this and what you would do next time? I would not have added white around me because mixed with the white of my shirt it looked like my head was floating. Save my effort in being careful of not erasing my self portrait would be nice. 5.Elaborate on how this piece links with your other pieces? What is the common thread? this piece does not really connect with my common thread this year, as I have chose to change my common thread to culture, specifically focusing on chicano culture. |
